About Dr Philip Woodland
Dr Philip Woodland, Consultant Gastroenterologist, currently works within the Royal London Hospital NHS Trust. He also sees patients privately at a London-based clinic in the Princess Grace Hospital. He is highly experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of gastrointestinal issues and is very skilled in performing a range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including gastroscopies, colonoscopies, and endoscopic ultrasounds.
Dr Woodland began his medical education in London at University College London, where he graduated with a BSc in Medicine and Surgery. He then went on to complete his specialist training in London and undertook a PhD focusing on gastro-oesophageal reflux disease at Queen Mary University. In his current position, he ensures that his patients feel comfortable and at ease. He endeavours to make patients feel heard and feel seen, giving them the attention and time they deserve. He uses his experience and expertise, alongside the patient's concerns and quality of life to create the best treatment plans possible.
Dr Woodland is a very active member of the research community, focusing on gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and difficulty when swallowing. His work has earned him regular invitations to present his findings and speak at conferences around the work on these topics. He is also an active teacher, holding the position of Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Royal London Hospital.

Dr Woodland is a consultant that I’d recently been referred to following an EoE and stricture diagnosis. After a possible 15 years of suffering, countless consultants, dissatisfaction with a lack of diagnosis and a general feeling of not being understood by other doctors, Dr. Woodland was a saviour for me, both mentally and physically. He was incredibly genial and very patient when I was explaining my journey and symptoms thus far, even apologising on behalf of other consultants, who I feel had essentially failed to do their job and contributed to anxiety around this condition. Dr. Woodland is very thorough when explaining a condition, both the nature and treatment, helping you completely understand what’s happening with you when you feel symptomatic and why it’s happening. I expressed in the consultation that this is the first time in over a decade that I have felt heard, understood and validated and I am greatly appreciative of him as I feel I am in the right hands now and going forward. I am now confident and more positive about my diagnosis and managing symptoms going forward, I only wish I’d found him sooner. I truly recommend Dr. Woodland to anybody suffering, he will put you at ease and make you feel hopeful again.
