After graduating with medical honours from The University of London in 1990 and gaining the general FRCS in 1995, Mr Bliss underwent specialist orthopaedic and trauma surgery training. Mr Bliss' advanced orthopaedic training was based at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington and The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore.
Mr Bliss completed his training in Orthopaedics and Trauma in 2000, obtaining the prestigiuos Walter Mercer Gold Medal award. Mr Bliss subsequently spent a year in sub-specialist fellowship training at The University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. During this time, Mr Bliss focused exclusively on knee surgery.
He was appointed as a consultant to Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, London in 2002, with his elective surgical practice being exclusively knee surgery. He is still actively involved in training surgeons in complex knee surgery and is a senior Inter-Collegiate Examiner for the FRCS exam in Orthopaedics - the final examination before trainee surgeons become consultants.
In his practice, Mr Bliss manages all aspects that relate to knee injuries, with a particular experience and depth of knowledge in complex ligament reconstruction, joint preservation (osteotomy and mensical transplant).
In his knee practice in both his NHS practice based Guy's Hospital and his private medical knee practice in central London, he provides second opinion and surgical support for a number of knee surgical colleagues, who refer complex cases to him.
He is a highly experienced knee consultant, providing exceptional care and treatment to his patients and serves as the head of the orthopaedic department at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, which employs over 30 consultant orthopaedic surgeons

James has helped me get to a stage I didn’t think I’d return to. Pain free and able to be fully active which is so important to me after having five years of reinjury after reinjury.

I’ve had multiple surgeries with James Bliss. He’s been up front honest and supportive throughout even when at times I didn’t want to hear what was said. He’s answered all my questions and I’d recommend him to anyone with a knee issue.

Mr Bliss has been absolutely incredible over the 3 operations I have had to get my knee right. He has kept me informed and involved in every decision that has been made during my ACL revision surgery and I could not be more grateful to him. This has been an ongoing problem for me for over 10 years and he has finally helped me put this to bed.
